San Martin de los Andes is the "Jewel" of the "Corredor de los Sietes Lagos", Seven Lakes Belt, and the most important tourist centre in Neuquen province. Situated on the shores of Lake Lacar the city is located in a natural basin protecting it from the wind.
It is stunningly beautiful, a unique place, almost hidden in the mountains within a natural habitat that is characteristic of the humid Patagonian Andes consisting of mountains blanketed with dense forests of colihue, pines, oaks and cypresses, crystalline streams and surrounded by forests.
The town has hotels, restaurants, tea houses, Viennese pastry houses, and there is hang-gliding, trekking, volcano climbing, and rafting to name just a few pursuits. Within the Lanin Natural Park there is the possibility for salmon fishing, trekking, rafting, mountaineering, 4 wheel drive excursions and much more. Fishing can be enjoyed all year round.
During winter the area is snow covered and perfect for skiing only 45 km from the Chilean border, in the fertile Vega Maipu valley San Martin de los Andes lies at 640 meters above sea level.
